Case Study
Horizons Training Program

In 2002, ChevronTexaco launched Horizons, a training and development program for employees in the company's upstream operations. The on-the-job program is targeted specifically toward employees in the first five years in their careers, and includes classes and field training to supplement employees' primary work assignments. Horizons combines the training programs of a variety of different functions into an integrated approach that provides employees with an opportunity to develop skills and knowledge across different functional areas.

Employees who participate in Horizons take on multiple assignments during the five-year program, with the majority of employees relocating at least once during this time. Through the program, employees also are assigned technical mentors to work with them during the different stages of their training and development process.

Horizons was modeled after ChevronTexaco Technical University, a successful one-year training program for downstream employees, which will have its fifth graduating class in 2003. In 2002, approximately 200 U.S.-based employees started the Horizons program and, in 2003, another 100 employees will begin. Although Horizons is initially available only to U.S.-based employees, the program can be adapted globally.
