Human Energy - In Abundance. Accelerating New Fuels

"With a fleet of hydrogen-powered transit buses now operating in the San Francisco Bay Area, we are tackling the challenges of developing hydrogen as a practical new source of energy."

As global demand for energy grows, Chevron is accelerating the development of new energy technologies and alternative fuels, such as hydrogen. We are investing in, and further developing, proprietary technologies that could one day make hydrogen competitive with conventional fuels.

In 2006, Chevron and the Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District (AC Transit) opened a hydrogen energy station in Oakland, California. The station uses first-of-its kind distributed on-site steam methane reforming to covert natural gas to hydrogen. The hydrogen powers three 40-foot fuel cell transit buses, which serve the Berkeley and Oakland communities, and a fleet of Hyundai-Kia fuel cell cars.

Plans are under way to install an on-site stationary fuel cell that will generate high-quality electricity for the adjacent AC Transit maintenance yard. Eventually, some of the electricity could be exported to the local utility for redistribution to homes or businesses.
