Human Energy - In Abundance. Safely Weathering Storms at Sea

"The hurricanes in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico caused very little environmental damage offshore, despite severe damage to rigs and platforms. That's because of advanced technology that can be used to shut off subsea wells in the event of an emergency."

The 2005 hurricane season was one of the worst in years for the U.S. Gulf Coast. Chevron safely evacuated approximately 9,500 employees and contractors working offshore seven times during the season.

During the evacuations, Chevron used SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) and satellite communications technology to monitor production remotely. This allowed production to continue while people were out of the path of the storm. When weather conditions were anticipated to reach hurricane strength, SCADA and other advanced technologies enabled us to halt production remotely and greatly limit any environmental damage that could be caused by storms.
