"Something needed to be done and done fast. We were having too many driving incidents. Chevron's Project Preserve safety team helped us reduce the number and severity of accidents in our Nigerian operations."
When a series of fatal crashes involving Chevron's product delivery fleet occurred in Africa, the Chevron Project Preserve team was dispatched to Nigeria to help local field operations improve truck and driver safety standards. The first priority was to implement standards that would have the greatest immediate effect on safety. In Nigeria, this included driver competence training and mechanical safety criteria, such as acceptable tire quality and properly working lights and seat belts. Once these issues were addressed, safety standards were increased. As a result, accidents and fatalities dropped sharply in 2005.
The truck safety program was so successful that it was rolled out across the 22-nation Africa-Pakistan region. In 2005, approximately 2,600 trucks were certified safe for loading, and 1,991 drivers were trained in defensive driving.
Project Preserve continues to implement critical safety processes and programs globally, including Chevron operations in Latin America and Asia.
