Immediately after the BP accident, Chevron provided its full support to BP's response. In addition to direct support, we are participating in four Joint Industry Task Forces with the goal of developing recommendations and implementation plans to raise drilling standards and oil spill response capability to even higher levels.
We share the expectation that the energy we all need should be produced safely and reliably. The oil and natural gas industry has successfully drilled 14,000 deepwater wells across the globe. The Gulf of Mexico is important to the energy security and economy of the United States, accounting for 30 percent of U.S. oil and gas production and supporting more than 170,000 jobs. Chevron believes that responsible development should be allowed to continue.
