John D. Gass
Corporate Vice President and President, Chevron Global Gas
John D. Gass is vice president of Chevron Corporation and president of Chevron Global Gas (CGG). CGG plays a key role in commercializing Chevron's natural gas resources while creating and developing new growth opportunities worldwide.
Gass also oversees Chevron's shipping company and pipeline operations as well as Chevron's participation in the Sasol Chevron gas-to-liquids joint venture.
A native of Key Biscayne, Florida, Gass graduated in 1974 from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering. He later earned a master's degree in civil engineering from Tulane University, in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1980.
Gass joined Chevron U.S.A. in 1974 as a design engineer in New Orleans, Louisiana. Over the years, he held positions of increasing responsibility in engineering, operations and management in Louisiana and California. In 1988, he was named operations manager for Amoseas Indonesia Inc. based in Jakarta, Indonesia. In 1991, Gass was named project manager for the Chevron's Alba Field development, a major North Sea development in the United Kingdom. In 1994, he was named profit center manager in Bay Marchand, Louisiana, for Chevron U.S.A. Production Co.
In April 1996, Gass was named managing director of Chevron Australia Pty. Ltd., headquartered in Perth, Australia, with responsibility for Chevron's oil and gas interests in Australia and Papua New Guinea, including the expansion of the North West Shelf liquefied natural gas facility.
In April 2001, he was named managing director of Chevron's Southern Africa strategic business unit based in Luanda, Angola, a position he maintained upon the formation of ChevronTexaco Corporation in October 2001. In this capacity, he was responsible for the company's oil and gas exploration and production activities in Angola, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Namibia. He was also responsible for development of the Angola LNG project with partner Sonangol, the state-owned oil company of Angola.
Gass assumed his present position in June 2003.
Gass is on the board of directors of Sasol Chevron, a 50/50 joint venture with Sasol Ltd., and the National Bureau of Asian Research. Gass serves in a variety of industry and civic organizations and is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Society of Petroleum Engineers, and is on the board of directors of the National Bureau of Asian Research.
