Chevron uses specific metrics to understand performance and drive incident-free operations. Our Operational Excellence (OE) Business Planning Guidelines direct operating companies and business units to develop their plans to continually improve performance, in accordance with established guidelines, metrics and targets.
Each year, we review the effectiveness of the implementation of the Operational Excellence Management System (OEMS) at the corporate, operating company and business unit levels to identify opportunities for improvement. Our Management System Process uses a risk-based approach to assess and review progress against OE objectives. We use the data we obtain to help prioritize efforts and direct resources based on potential risk. Our leadership also uses the data to prioritize our improvement efforts, which are included in our business plans.
Internal steering committees work together to set corporate OE priorities, approve operating standards and processes, review performance and ensure we achieve OE in practical and efficient ways. Leaders manage and monitor risks at all levels of the company, including operating companies, business units and corporate departments. Leaders are involved in all aspects of OE governance. Finally, Chevron's Board of Directors receives periodic reports on safety, risk management, process safety, environmental performance, OE audit results and any significant incidents.
Chevron's incident investigation and reporting processes provide a framework for examining and identifying root causes of near misses, losses and incidents to prevent them from recurring in the future. Managers share lessons learned throughout the organization, address similar hazards in their areas of responsibility and resolve deficiencies. Bulletins, safety meetings, incident studies and other methods aid communication.
Every member of Chevron's workforce participates in OE activities. Additionally, more than 14,000 of our leaders have participated in OE certification to ensure they have the fundamental knowledge, skills and behaviors required to help guide our OE culture.
