Dr. Harry Butler

Renowned naturalist Dr. Harry Butler examines a marine fossil near a termite mound on Barrow Island, offshore Western Australia.

For 45 years, Dr. Harry Butler has worked with Chevron to develop and maintain a crude oil field on Barrow Island in an environmentally responsible manner. A Class A nature reserve, Barrow Island is Australia’s largest onshore producing field. Now Dr. Butler is serving as a consultant and adviser as we develop the Gorgon Project, a vast natural gas development offshore Western Australia. Barrow Island will be the site of a domestic natural gas plant and a three-train, 15 million-metric-ton-per-year liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility. It also will accommodate the world’s largest, most advanced carbon-dioxide injection program, making Gorgon one of the most greenhouse gas-efficient LNG developments anywhere. The Gorgon Project is being developed in collaboration with our partners, Australian authorities and local communities. It will meet some of the most stringent environmental requirements ever imposed on an LNG project. Gorgon contains approximately 40 trillion cubic feet of natural gas resources and is expected to be a major contributor to Chevron’s growth over the next four decades, as well as to the economic growth of Australia. A groundbreaking ceremony took place in 2009, with major construction planned in the second half of 2010. First LNG deliveries are expected in 2014.
