Strategy: Invest in people to strengthen organizational capability and develop a talented global workforce that gets results the right way.
Our company's success depends on the performance of our highly talented workforce. We invest in people to strengthen core competencies and to build organizational capability. This is how we ensure that we have the right people in the right place at the right time to deliver our strategies the right way.
Recruiting
We are proud to have a globally diverse workforce. Our University Partnership Program (UPP) helps us recruit the best and the brightest from around the world. At the end of 2012, we had forged relationships with more than 90 leading universities, including schools in Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Scotland, Thailand and the United States.
Through UPP, we support initiatives that build technical capacity, as well as serve the community. Two such initiatives were developed in 2012. At Rice University in Houston, Texas, UPP and the National Science Foundation provided funding for the state-of-the-art Chevron Visualization Laboratory, which includes a 200-inch (508-centimeter) 3-D visualization wall. The facility is used not only by the university, but also is available to others in the community, including medical professionals. Additionally, UPP increased its financial support and presence at Pennsylvania State University to help build capacity in disciplines designed to provide the region with a technically proficient workforce. UPP also provides funding to Penn State's Marcellus Center for Outreach and Research, whose leading scholars and researchers address issues relating to the development of natural gas from shale. The university named Chevron the 2012 Corporate Partner of the Year.
Development
We give our employees the tools and support they need to be top performers and to grow professionally. We encourage employee development through experiential learning, mentoring and training, and international assignments. In 2012, we offered more than 2,400 technical training classes and greatly expanded training opportunities outside the United States.
Our Mentoring Excellence in Technology program gives our technical experts a strong business orientation so that they develop and deploy technology in ways that help us achieve our strategies. Since 2000, our Chevron Fellows have mentored approximately 550 technical employees. The Chevron Fellows are recognized worldwide as experts in their respective fields.
Organizational Capability
The scale and complexity of our operations and our major capital projects require that we deepen our skill sets and accelerate our efforts to build organizational capability. To that end, we are taking steps to better link production and manufacturing operations and integrate key talent across the enterprise. One example is the collaboration between our upstream and downstream operations. Since 2007, we have transferred approximately 650 employees from manufacturing and related jobs to apply their expertise to our pioneering and highly complex crude oil and natural gas projects. These include the Hamaca heavy-oil upgrader in Venezuela and expansion projects at the Tengiz Field in Kazakhstan.
To further build organizational capability, our upstream organization is partnering with our Energy Technology Company on training and is developing long-term staffing and action plans to effectively apply the company's expertise in executing our future major capital projects. Throughout the company, we are strengthening our project management system and expanding development programs to achieve consistent and predictable results on all capital projects.
Building organizational capability extends to our contractors as well. To ensure they meet our expectations, we drive and monitor all critical functions involved in a project, including quality assurance, craft productivity and project controls. We also have established project management centers of expertise to help shape our contractors’ use of our project management standards.
