In Australia, Chevron operates through a wholly owned subsidiary, Chevron Australia Pty Ltd, the largest holder of natural gas resources in the country. These important assets help meet the growing need for energy in the Asia-Pacific region. We operate two major liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects in Australia, Gorgon and Wheatstone.
The Gorgon Project is an LNG and domestic gas joint venture supplied by the Greater Gorgon Area gas fields. The project is being developed on Barrow Island and is the largest single-resource development in Australia's history.
Gorgon Project Update — First Quarter 2015
Construction of the Gorgon Project on Barrow Island, offshore Western Australia, is nearing completion with startup and the first cargo of liquefied natural gas expected later this year.
We also are developing the Wheatstone Project as an LNG and domestic gas operation near Onslow, in the West Pilbara region of Western Australia. It will be Australia's first natural gas distribution hub.
The project's initial capacity is expected to be 8.9 million metric tons per year of LNG.
Chevron has safely produced oil at Barrow Island oil fields for more than 50 years. Along with other participants in the North West Shelf Venture, Chevron has exported LNG to Asian customers since 1989 and domestic gas to Australian customers since 1984.
