In Brazil, Chevron funds programs that support small businesses, education and environmental stewardship in the communities where we work.
Four of the initiatives we support work to create employment and business opportunities for women living in Río de Janeiro and Espírito Santo states.
- Inclusão Comunitária (Community Inclusion) — Conducted in partnership with Instituto Aliança (Alliance Institute), this program provides women with personal skills development and professional training that is matched to work and income opportunities in their communities. Approximately 60 women have been able to generate income for their families in businesses ranging from food cooperatives to apparel manufacturing.
- Com.domínio Digital (With Digital Domain) — Developed in partnership with Instituto Aliança and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), this program uses an alternative model of professional education to help young women develop personal skills while receiving training in information technology. Since 2010, the project has trained 250 young women aged 14 to 29 in Río de Janeiro and has attained a high rate of job placement.
- Enter Jovem Plus (Enter Young Plus) — This program focuses on improving the professional skills of people aged 14 to 29, 65 percent of whom are women. Implemented in partnership with Instituto Empreender (Endeavor) in Río de Janeiro's public schools system, the program teaches English and vocational skills. We partner with USAID and the Río de Janeiro State Secretaries of Education and of Work and Income. Since 2010, about 1,000 youth in approximately 30 schools have taken part in the initiative.
- Elas em Movimento (Women in Motion) — Implemented in partnership with Fundo ELAS de Investimento Social (Women Social Investment Fund), this project aims to foster income generation opportunities for women in struggling communities. Chevron helps develop small businesses in four struggling Río de Janeiro communities where the government focuses law enforcement and social service resources. The projects supported include a restaurant, a soap factory that uses recycled oil, an event rental and catering company, and a café/bar.
Volunteer Program
We created the Energy Partnership Program so that our employees could take part in activities that express the principles and values of Chevron's social responsibility objectives. The program gives employees a chance to share their skills and experiences and help those in need foster their personal, social and professional development.
