In 2000, Chevron, through its subsidiaries, became a participant in two major projects in Chad.
The first was the development of the Doba crude oil fields in the south. The second involved the construction and operation of a pipeline to transport oil from those fields to an export terminal in Cameroon. Together, they represent one of the largest industrial projects in Africa.
The Chad-Cameroon development project is helping to forge a strong relationship between these two nations. The pipelines have a major impact on the local economies of both countries.
During construction of the field facilities and the pipeline, the consortium that built the project employed more than 35,000 people. Between 2000 and 2004, more than $700 million was spent locally and split between the two countries. As the project went forward, the partners also worked to preserve biodiversity and protect local people and their culture.
