In the Community

| More

In Kazakhstan, Chevron partners with local and national governments, communities, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), and other groups to deliver programs in three areas:

  • Basic human needs
  • Education and career training
  • Support for local small and medium-sized businesses

Committed to the Community

Chevron's community engagement priorities are shared by our joint ventures. From 1993 to 2012, Tengizchevroil (TCO) invested more than $800 million in social projects for the community and employees in the Atyrau Province.

TCO community investment efforts are managed by two signature programs: Egilik and the TCO Community Investment Program.

When the Tengizchevroil joint venture began in 1993, the company created a five-year, $50 million program called the Atyrau Bonus Fund. In 1999, TCO replaced the fund with Egilik Fund. By the end of 2012, TCO had invested almost $200 million in the Egilik Fund, which has supported schools, hospitals and clinics, as well as the construction of water and electricity projects.

In 2012, most of Egilik's $20 million budget was dedicated to replacing the water system in Kulsary, the nearest community to the Tengiz Field and home to many TCO employees and contractors. TCO has budgeted another $25 million for Egilik for 2013.

Since 1997, TCO has given more than $13 million to the small-business development programs that provide financial assistance to local entrepreneurs in areas such as agriculture, waste management and health care, as well as oil and gas equipment and services.

Karachaganak Investing in the Future

We also work with our Karachaganak partners to help the community. Since 2009, the Karachaganak partners' annual investment in social infrastructure projects in the West Kazakhstan region has increased from $10 million to $20 million.

Since 1998, the partners have allocated more than $240 million to social infrastructure projects in western Kazakhstan.

Promoting Education

Support for educational and training programs has been Chevron's practice for many years.

In Kazakhstan, Chevron's University Partnership Program has worked with Kazakh National Technical University (KazNTU) to provide grants and scholarships to help talented young people gain advanced professional and technical training. Chevron also assists universities in setting up new curricula and training teachers.

Since 2007, Chevron and KazNTU have provided scholarships for more than 250 high-achieving graduate and undergraduate students. Chevron helped create a partnership between KazNTU and the Colorado School of Mines. We also support KazNTU's student chapter of the International Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE). In 2012, the chapter received the SPE's prestigious Golden Standard prize for outstanding results in educational and social programs.

In 2011, we signed a two-year partnership agreement with Nazarbayev University to establish the Centre for Energy Research and Social Development Fund to support young scientists. In 2012, Chevron awarded grants to 14 innovative projects in renewable energy, nuclear and nanotechnologies.

In 2012, Chevron supported the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math Laboratory at the Children's Library in Almaty. The program aims to develop an interest in science and innovation among children.

In 2012, we partnered with the Eurasia Foundation of Central Asia and the International Business Academy in Almaty to lay the foundation for the NGO Expert Centre, whose mission is to support Kazakhstani NGOs.

Chevron partners with the U.S. Embassy to offer young entrepreneurs financial assistance for small projects aimed at solving social issues.

Chevron supports the Union of Artisans, which works to preserve cultural heritage and develop craftspeople. Seven regional hubs throughout Kazakhstan were opened to help 90 artisans in 2012.

Basic Human Needs

Chevron supports projects that provide health care and promote healthy lifestyles.

We work with Educational Centre Bilim Central Asia on The Future Is Your Choice. The program provides vocational education students with health information and promotes tolerance and support for those suffering with AIDS.

In 2012, Chevron partnered with local NGO Aist Centre to implement the second year of a program to promote healthy pregnancy. Information packages, innovative training programs and individual consultations were provided to more than 2,000 vulnerable women.
