Protecting People and the Environment
In the United States, natural gas from shale rock provides reliable, affordable, clean and responsibly produced energy. In the communities where Chevron operates, it also fuels job growth and contributes to local economies.
Geological estimates suggest Poland has substantial undiscovered natural gas resources from shale formations. With proper development, these opportunities could potentially provide many of the same benefits to regional and national economies in Poland.
Chevron holds the protection of people and the environment as core values wherever we operate. Our aim is to ensure that all our contributions in Poland are positive and that we are known as a good neighbor, partner and steward of the environment. All planned activities in Poland are preceded by environmental, social and health impact assessment as well as consultation with local communities regarding their needs.
Being a Good Neighbor
Chevron is working closely with communities to ensure we direct resources to issues that are important to the people who live there. We support and invest in projects that will provide benefits for years to come.
To that end, the company opened the doors to a newly renovated community center in the village of Horodysko, Lesniowice, in southeast Poland. The project is part of a community engagement program that also included the construction of two pedestrian crossings near the local primary school and improvements to local roads. The event provided the opportunity to discuss work plans with residents of Horodysko and the nearby village of Rakołupy.
In December 2012, Chevron organized a community day for the citizens of the villages Zawada and Siedliska. The event, held prior to starting a well in the Zwierzyniec concession Z1, was attended by members of the community including local students and teachers.
In 2011, Chevron co-hosted a celebration for the community of Lesniowice, near our G6 well site. The event, part of the community's harvest festival, provided the company with an opportunity to inform residents of the forthcoming drilling operations in the area. Before drilling began, our operations and field personnel were joined onsite by the mayor, local dignitaries and a local priest, who offered a special blessing of the well and those working on it.
In 2010, Chevron donated funds to the Polish Red Cross to support relief efforts following widespread flooding that claimed several lives and saw thousands displaced from their homes. The region of Lublin, where Chevron is exploring for natural gas from shale, was badly affected. Our support helped provide first aid and communications equipment.
Chevron continues to work with communities to identify opportunities for improvements to local infrastructure.
