Chevron's social investments in Trinidad and Tobago focus on education, health and environmental programs.
Education
Chevron supports education programs that benefit Trinidad and Tobago's future workforce and support the nation's economy.
In 2009 and 2010, Chevron remodeled three primary schools in rural areas of the country, benefiting more than 600 students. The interiors and exteriors of schools in Caratal, Tamana and Grand Riviere underwent extensive work. Roofs, ceilings, walls and floors were repaired. Entrances and exits were made safe. Bathrooms, drinking fountains and electrical systems were upgraded. Each school received a new first aid room, and the playgrounds were renovated.
Health
Chevron has supported the Hope of a Miracle Children's Health Program, a foundation to help critically ill children from low-income families receive medical treatments not available in their area. Through an alliance with International Kids, the program helped children in Trinidad and Tobago gain immediate access to essential medical treatments.
Environment
Protecting the environment is one of Chevron's key values, so in Trinidad and Tobago we are working to protect endangered sea turtles.
Grande Riviere is a small, rural village along Trinidad's northern coast. It is home to one of the world's most important leatherback sea turtle nesting beaches. Though less than a mile long, this beach hosts more than 5,000 turtles per season. At the peak of the season, eggs will hatch in more than 500 nests in a single night. Unfortunately, few hatchlings survive to adulthood, mostly due to natural predators such as shorebirds and crustaceans.
Chevron is doing its part to save the species with contributions to a group in Grande Riviere that protects the turtles. Our funds have gone toward promotional materials and have helped refurbish the Turtle Preservation Center.
