Thousands of Ventura County motorists are performing a public service just by filling their gas tanks this month. They have joined the ranks of many more thousands of Alameda and Contra Costa County motorists who filled up and raised money for the classroom in September.
Chevron's "Fuel Your School" promotions donate $1 for every fill-up of eight or more gallons to support public education. Money raised at participating Ventura County Chevron gas stations in December will support the five nonprofit partners of the Chevron World Challenge. Earlier this fall, more than $850,000 was raised to help provide 640 local public schools with supplies for more than 1,000 classroom projects in East Bay communities of the Bay Area.
The Fuel Your School promotion is part of Chevron's global Energy for Learning Initiative. The initiative partners with local communities, governments and non-profit groups to expand learning opportunities and enhance the quality of education in communities where Chevron does business.
For the month-long September promotion, Fuel Your School organizers encouraged eligible public and charter school educators from Alameda and Contra Costa counties to join the program at DonorsChoose.org. Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) related classroom projects were considered for funding as part of the promotion.
Through a dedicated website, www.fuelyourschool.com, consumers were able to track how much money was raised in their city and see the results of funded projects as well as feedback from educators who had been helped through the promotion.
The company's Chevron Classroom Challenge also awarded $250,000 in grants to 10 different public schools with the most innovative projects from the Fuel Your School promotion. Submissions entered in the Chevron Classroom Challenge through DonorsChoose.org were judged and scored in the areas of hands-on and sustainable learning while supporting existing classroom curriculum and other criteria.
