Traditional skateboards are often too long to fit in a standard locker, too distracting to put under a desk, and too dangerous to leave in the corner of a classroom. Struggling with the question of where to store their skateboards during class, but still wanting to ride to school, a group of teenagers at Warren High School worked together to design and engineer a skateboard that could be conveniently stowed away during the school day.
The students designed the skateboard using skills learned in their Project Lead The Way engineering class and presented their project to a panel of professional engineers. The team placed first in the Chevron Design Challenge Regionals and advanced to the state finals competition. After a tough competition, the group finished only three points behind first place.
"I feel great about where we placed today," said student competitor Alex. "We worked hard all day and got to do what we had to do and exceeded our own expectations."
