In Vietnam we work to build long-term partnerships that foster economic development and lasting benefits to communities. The three main focus areas of our social investment are education, health and economic development. All three are essential to improving the quality of life in the areas where we operate.
Education
Chevron is expanding access to education for elementary school children in the Mekong Delta through a program developed by the National Fund for Vietnamese Children. By the end of 2012, a Chevron-led consortium had granted more than 3,000 scholarships to young students. Along with our partners—PetroVietnam Exploration Production Corporation, Mitsui Oil Exploration Co., Ltd., and PTT Exploration and Production Plc.—we sponsored improvements to classrooms and schoolyards at schools in Can Tho, Ca Mau, Kien Giang, Bac Lieu and Hau Giang.
Health
Chevron contributed $1 million to the Global Fund for investment in Vietnam's HIV/AIDS grant in 2012 and 2013. The grant provides medicines, testing and counseling to help prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV, and many other beneficial programs designed to fight against the spread of HIV and AIDS.
Economic Development
Chevron works with Save the Children in Can Tho to help women develop small businesses. The program provides women with access to loans and financial-skills training. The Golden Hands program is designed to help more than 2,270 women in low-income households improve their skills in animal husbandry, home gardening, aquaculture and running service businesses. By the end of 2012, more than 1,460 women in Can Tho had received small loans.
