In 1992, we created the Chevron Energy Index to track the efficiency of our energy use across all of our operations. Each activity in our company is evaluated and assigned an index number. Our overall progress is aggregated into a single corporate index for which we set a yearly target.

We also created a specific position — a Corporate Energy Coordinator — to lead the company’s energy-efficiency efforts. The coordinator is responsible for leading energy-efficiency improvement programs, developing and improving energy best practices that can be shared among work groups, and conducting energy reviews to assist in prioritizing energy opportunities across the company.

Since 1992, we have improved the energy index of our global operations by 34 percent.

How did we do it?

We invested hundreds of millions of dollars in energy-efficiency efforts directed at reducing the amount of energy we use in our operations. Every day, energy savings are achieved by taking actions ranging from repairing steam traps and installing more-efficient heat exchangers to constructing more-efficient power plants. We’re constantly exploring new ways to save energy.
