Supporting diversity is one of the seven values in The Chevron Way.

Having a workforce that reflects the composition of the marketplaces we serve and the communities where we operate is an important competitive advantage. Chevron works to leverage the rich diversity of ideas, experience and skill of our employees.

Chevron strives to be recognized as a leader in global diversity and as a company that values and leverages diversity and inclusion for business needs. Chevron gains competitive advantage by respecting and understanding the unique talents and characteristics of each individual and by leveraging skills, ideas and experiences.

We recognize that in our global environment, having a workforce that mirrors the composition of the marketplace that we operate in and serve is a key competitive advantage. Diversity and inclusion mean going beyond acceptance of cultural, ethnic, national and religious differences. We also value and encourage diversity of thought and perspectives. The richness of our creative diversity increases our ability to achieve our vision, and enhances Chevron's work environment.

Fostering a Key Value

Supporting diversity is one of the seven values in The Chevron Way. The Chevron Way explains who we are, what we do, what we believe and what we plan to accomplish. It establishes a common understanding not only for those of us who work here, but also for all who interact with us.

We learn from and respect the cultures in which we work. We value and demonstrate respect for the uniqueness of individuals and the varied perspectives and talents they provide. We have an inclusive work environment and actively embrace a diversity of people, ideas, talents and experiences. — The Chevron Way

Our commitment to diversity and inclusion is more than words, more than a set of goals. Our actions speak for themselves.

  • Employee affinity groups have grown rapidly. More than 18,000 Chevron employees participate in one or more Employee Networks. These include networks for ethnic minorities, women, the disabled, baby boomers, gays and lesbians, and younger employees. Networks help eliminate barriers, improve communication between employees and cultivate links with the communities where we work.
  • Diversity councils exist throughout the company to help promote a work environment in which every employee has the maximum opportunity to contribute to company goals.
  • We tie managers' performance ratings to their hiring of diverse candidates and ensure that our selection teams and candidate slates represent a range of backgrounds.
  • We set high diversity and inclusion goals and measure organizational results. As of July 2007, we exceeded our goals in the number of women and non-Caucasian males in senior-level positions.
  • We have programs such as diversity training, diversity moments, personal diversity action plans and lunch-time diversity learning sessions — to ensure that our employees understand our policies and know how inclusion is practiced throughout our company.
  • We have a robust supplier diversity program. In 2008, we spent more than $950 million on products and services from women- and minority-owned business enterprises in the United States.
  • As part of Chevron's University Partnership Program, we've established long-term, strategic relationships with 18 universities around the world to acquire and develop talent and leverage technology and research globally.

Recognized by Others for Our Inclusion

Chevron was the first major integrated energy company to:

  • include sexual orientation in our nondiscriminatory policies;
  • offer domestic-partner benefits to our employees; and
  • achieve a perfect score on the Human Rights Campaign Corporate Equality Index.

Our diversity and inclusion initiatives have been honored by the U.S. Department of Defense, the National Minority Supplier Development Council and the Women's Business Enterprise National Council. Diversity Best Practices and the Business Women's Network recognized then Chevron Chairman Dave O'Reilly for achievements in diversity and inclusion.

We also have been named "Corporation of the Year" by the Golden Triangle Minority Supplier Development Council, the Gulf South Minority Supplier Development Council and the Louisiana Minority Business Council.

And Chevron is ranked No. 7 in the Top 50 Employers featured in the winter 2007/2008 edition of Equal Opportunity magazine. Readers of Equal Opportunity magazine selected the top companies in the United States for which they would most prefer to work or that are progressive in hiring members of minority groups.
