Chevron strives to be recognized as a leader in global diversity and as a company that values and leverages diversity and inclusion for business needs. We benefit from respecting and understanding the unique talents and characteristics of each individual and by leveraging skills, ideas and experiences. Additionally, by having a workforce that reflects the communities where we work, we gain an important competitive advantage. Diversity and inclusion mean going beyond acceptance of cultural, ethnic, national or religious differences. We also value and encourage diversity of thought and perspectives. The richness of our diversity increases our ability to achieve our vision and enhances Chevron's work environment.

Fostering a Key Value

Supporting diversity is one of the seven values in The Chevron Way. The Chevron Way explains who we are, what we do, what we believe and what we plan to accomplish. It establishes a common understanding not only for those of us who work here, but also for all who interact with us.

Our commitment to diversity and inclusion is more than words, more than a set of goals. Our actions speak for themselves.

  • Approximately 25,000 Chevron employees participate in one or more affinity groups. These groups focus on gender, race, sexual orientation, age, disability and nationality. These networks help improve communication among employees and cultivate links with the communities where we work.
  • Diversity councils throughout the company help promote a work environment which strives to provide every employee with the maximum opportunity to contribute to company goals.
  • To ensure that our employees understand our policies and know how inclusion is practiced throughout our company, we have programs such as diversity training, diversity moments, personal diversity action plans and lunch-time diversity learning sessions.
  • We have a robust supplier diversity program. In 2011 in the United States, we spent more than $2.1 billion on products and services from small businesses. We spent $451.6 million on products and services from women-owned businesses and $381.8 million on products and services from minority-owned businesses.

As part of Chevron's University Partnership Program, we help bring together schools from around the globe to strengthen development and diversity of thought. In the United States, the program provides support to encourage minority participation in disciplines vital in meeting the world's energy demands.

Recognized by Others for Our Inclusion

Chevron was the first major integrated energy company to:

  • Include sexual orientation in its nondiscriminatory policies
  • Offer domestic-partner benefits to employees
  • Achieve a perfect score on the Human Rights Campaign Corporate Equality Index

Our diversity and inclusion initiatives have been recognized by organizations such as the Women's Business Enterprise National Council for Diversity Best Practices.

We were recognized by the publishers of DiversityBusiness.com magazine as one of the "Top Organizations for Multicultural Business Opportunities" and by the Human Rights Campaign as one of the "Best Places to Work for LGBT Equality." In 2012, for the third year, we received the Diversity Leader Award from Profiles in Diversity Journal for communicating the company's commitment to diversity and inclusion by sharing thoughts, perspectives, insights and best practices.
