Public policy decisions often have significant implications for Chevron's current operations and future direction. Accordingly, Chevron exercises its fundamental right and responsibility to participate in the political process. Our activities meet high ethical standards, are done in accordance with strict company procedures and guidelines, are aligned with company interests, and are done in a manner that demonstrates accountability and transparency.
Philosophy and Rationale
Chevron exercises its fundamental right and responsibility to participate in the political process. We make political contributions where permitted by law and, consistent with Company policy, to support political candidates who and political organizations or ballot measures that are committed to economic development, free enterprise and good government.
In the U.S. and abroad, Chevron is committed to adhering to the highest standards of ethics and transparency in engaging in any political activities and to complying with the letter and spirit of all laws and regulations governing political contributions. As a matter of practice, Chevron makes only limited contributions outside the United States.
Procedures
Every political contribution Chevron makes is subject to a thorough review process, and our review procedures are routinely verified. All corporate political contributions are centrally controlled, and regardless of the amount or country of donation, are planned, budgeted, legally reviewed and approved in advance by senior management, and in certain cases, by the Office of the Chairman. Political contributions are typically initially proposed and budgeted by public affairs representatives in the Company, working closely with business unit managers at all levels of the organization. Proposed actions are tested for their alignment with and support of clearly-communicated business unit objectives and company interests. All contributions and all Chevron employees adhere to strict internal review procedures, and no employee is reimbursed for making a political contribution.
Once each contribution has been made, it is reported as required by law in the applicable jurisdiction where the contribution is made.
Accountability
We take a number of steps to ensure transparency and accountability for these contributions:
- Contribution data are available from a number of public sources.
- The Public Policy Committee of its Board annually receives and reviews a detailed report of the prior year's contributions.
- Annually, a contributions report is available to employees on the company's internal Web site.
- Upon written request by any stockholder, we have a long-standing practice of furnishing a list of all political contributions. This listing may also be viewed at the following link.
