The European Chemicals Agency, located in Finland, will manage the registration, evaluation, authorization and restriction processes for chemical substances to ensure consistency across the European Union.

Protecting People and the Environment is one of the foundational values of Chevron Oronite, and it is also a primary goal of the new REACH legislation (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization of Chemicals) in the European Union (EU).

REACH requires the pre-registration of all chemicals manufactured in or imported into the EU in 2008, followed by final registration of the chemicals in phases. The potential impacts to the supply chain are significant because any chemical or compound that does not meet REACH requirements could either be banned from the EU or have its use restricted.

Oronite has already begun preparing for pre-registration and registration, and will participate in a Substance Information Exchange Forums to support the REACH initiative. Our Product Stewardship process for the responsible management of our products strongly supports our ability to meet REACH requirements. Modification of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and Labels will be updated to the new Globally Harmonized System (GHS) requirements under REACH.

Registration requires a comprehensive hazard, exposure and risk assessment for each chemical. Information on chemicals must be shared within the industry and with the public, including the properties of the substances, and the potential risks (associated with specific uses) to humans and the environment. Information on appropriate risk reduction measures will also be provided.

Oronite has pledged to support our business partners in their efforts to prepare REACH and meet the goal of improving protection for human health and the environment. Oronite values its employees, customers and partners in the EU and will continue working closely with them in this effort.
