The People of Singapore and Japan - New Safety Milestones Achieved

Did You Know?

Protecting people is not just the way we do business, it's part of our values - who we are as individuals and collectively as a company. Our goal is zero incidents ... always, everywhere, and for the right reasons.

An operator checks and then re-checks the monitors of a plant's manufacturing unit as a coworker watches nearby. A supervisor works side-by-side with employees and outside contract workers to show how to shut down an operation in case safety is threatened. Emergency action plans are reviewed, tested and then rehearsed.

These are daily events which occur around the globe in the safety-first culture at Chevron Oronite.

Chevron Oronite's Omaezaki plant in Japan, officially known as Chevron Oronite Japan Limited (COJL), has a spotless record in terms of industrial leaks, fires or environmental incidents.

COJL represents the right way to minimize risks, lower costs, create value and strengthen our position as a preferred supplier. But our commitment to safety extends to everyone, from truck driver to lab technician to sales person, from Tokyo to Dubai, Toronto to Houston.

At Oronite's Singapore Manufacturing Plant (SMP), near the headquarters of the company's Asia-Pacific operations, another milestone was reached. The one-year safety mark was passed last August where no worker recorded a DAFW (Days Away From Work). This milestone comes after an intense, two-year effort to drive our employees and the leadership team to take personal responsibility to improve safety for themselves and their co-workers.

SMP leadership invested and provided education programs to more than 30 participants who held supervisory roles. Supervisors then shared this knowledge in the plants with their work teams. Communicating the program's intent required extraordinary effort due to the diversity of cultures and languages in the plant workforce.

"The topics covered to date include learning styles and cycle, leading change, leadership style, communication skills, adept handling of conflict situations, and building trust and relationships among the group members and their own supervisors. We place the highest priority on the health and safety of our workforce, on the protection of our assets and on safeguarding the environment." said John Ngo, SMP's Environmental Health and Safety Manager.

These milestones stem from a commitment from the Oronite Leadership Team to nurture a "culture of safety." Peer observation and feedback constantly puts safety first in every facet of daily work to eliminate at-risk events. That means a safer worker, local resident, and it makes Oronite a preferred supplier for customers.
