Using Engine oil that meets GF-5 standards is one step automakers can take to help them achieve the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) milestone of 35.5 miles per gallon by the year 2016.
The International Lubricants Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) is currently developing the next-generation motor oil specification, called GF-5. This new standard is expected to take effect in late 2010. The Japanese Automotive Manufacturers Association (JAMA) is part of ILSAC and has a vote in the development of this new specification.
GF-5 oils will be designed to improve the function and performance of new engine and emission designs to ensure compliance with the new USA government regulations. When new performance standards are developed by ILSAC and approved by the American Petroleum Institute (API), these standards are generally accepted and implemented by the rest of the world. The GF-5 specification is no exception; it will have global impact.
Oronite’s history in the development of industry standard test procedures has allowed us to play an integral role in helping the industry meet the new GF-5 standards. Our additive packages will be formulated to enable GF-5 certified engine oils to:
GF-5 motor oils will have to be backwards compatible to accommodate older vehicles that are on the road. In addition these GF-5 certified oils provide better protection for the high-tech engines of the future running on bio-fuels and those using new seal materials.
Oronite is well-positioned to help automakers, oil marketers and even consumers understand these new standards and why they will make their cars run better and cleaner. For more information, contact your Oronite representative.
