Marine Lubricant Applications

The marine market consists of 3 segments in broad terms that use either residual or distillate fuel, which is characterized by its high sulfur content:

  • Propulsion engines for large deep-draft and smaller coastal vessels
  • Auxiliary engines installed on vessels
  • Power generation

These applications are served by two types of engines:

  • Two-cycle, slow-speed crosshead engines, which require a marine cylinder lubricant (MCL) that is injected into the cylinder during operation and a system oil that lubricates the crankcase
  • Four-cycle, medium speed trunk piston engines, which require a single lubricant, commonly known as a trunk piston engine oil (TPEO), because they have a common sump for the cylinder and crankcase
