GTL MTI Product Upgrade

Russ joined Chevron in 1976 with a PhD and other chemical engineering degrees from Princeton and Wisconsin. Initial assignments were to improve fuel oil by hydrodesulfurization and to improve gasoline by fluidized catalytic cracking. Russ joined lubricants in 1986 to support the former Gulf base oil refinery in Port Arthur and he became the Base Oil Technology team leader in 1991. Highlights include commercialization of ISODEWAXING and the Base Oil 2000 Project to further increase RLOP production and make UCBO. Russ also led two other commercially successful upgrades to IDW as well as upgrades to base oil ISOCRACKING and hydrotreating and he participated in making the business case for creating TEMA.

As project leader for the Gas-To-Liquids Major Technology Initiative, Russ is exploring new technologies that may make a wide range of base oils that have premium performance like synthetic oils, and that may be manufactured economically in volumes previously feasible only from petroleum.
