Fire Safety Education

Sparky the Fire Dog

Since Sparky the Fire Dog became a part of Chevron Pascagoula’s Fire Department in 1994, he’s carried his safety message to tens of thousands of enthusiastic youngsters throughout South Mississippi and South Alabama. The immensely popular robotic Dalmatian spends time year round taking his fire safety message to local schools, but is always solidly booked in October – National Fire Prevention Month.

Sparky talks with students about “Stop, Drop and Roll” and home smoke detectors from his red fire truck that features flashing lights, a siren and a miniature fire hose. The remote-controlled robotic, stuffed animal is a pro at teaching kids fire safety. Along with his Plant Protection Fire Specialist managers – who speak for Sparky and operate his movements via remote control – Sparky hopes to stop fires before they start by teaching the young students fire prevention lessons.

As Sparky’s head rotates and mouth moves with voice synchronization through a wireless microphone, the kids feel like Sparky is actually carrying on a conversation with them. After the lively lessons, the Fire Dog uses his small fire hose to spray a light stream of water throughout the audience, much to the delight of students and teachers alike. His presentation also features the distribution of personalized Sparky stickers and coloring books that reinforce the fire safety messages.

Volunteer Fire Department Training

Chevron Pascagoula’s professional firefighters with the refinery’s Plant Protection Group host an annual training program for area community volunteer firefighters.

Chevron Firetruck

During the full-day training session, Chevron Fire Specialists provide volunteer firefighters training in dealing with hydrocarbon fires, such as those involving automobiles, propane cylinders and gasoline stations. Smokehouse, pressured pipe and fire behavior training is also conducted during the training held each spring at the refinery’s Fire Training Grounds.
