Wildlife Preservation Programs

Wildlife Rehabilitation & Preservation Society, Inc. (WRANPS)

Organized in 1983, the Wildlife Rehabilitation & Preservation Society of the Gulf Coast is a federal and state rehabilitation permitted organization of volunteers dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and release of injured and orphaned native Mississippi species of wildlife.

Chevron supports WRANPS rescue and rehabilitation efforts, with a particular emphasis on wildlife care in the event of an oil spill. While the refinery’s first responsibility is to operate crude transportation activities in an environmentally sound manner, we are prepared in the event of an oil spill and WRANPS participation is an important part of our response plan. We are confident in the ability of the highly trained WRANPS volunteers to help us mitigate impact to wildlife affected by a spill in area waters.

WRANPS, a non-profit group governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, is supported entirely with paid memberships and donations. To learn more visit WRANPS website at www.animalconcerns.org

Wildlife Extravaganza – Pascagoula Refinery employee Mickey McDonald hosts the Chevron booth at the Mississippi Wildlife Federation’s annual Wildlife Extravaganza in Jackson.

The Mississippi Wildlife Federation

Chartered in 1946, the Mississippi Wildlife Federation is a non-profit federation of individuals, businesses, and organizations committed to natural resource conservation, environmental quality, and outdoor recreation in Mississippi. A citizens’ organization, not a state or federal agency, the MWF is the state affiliate of the National Wildlife Federation - the world’s largest private conservation organization.

Chevron partners annually with the MWF to sponsor the state’s largest outdoor hunting, fishing and recreational exhibition – the Mississippi Wildlife Federation’s Wildlife Extravaganza. Held each August at the Mississippi Trade Mart in Jackson, the three-day event serves as the federation’s primary fundraiser.

During the event, Chevron volunteers host a booth and a drawing for a Lifetime Mississippi Hunting & Fishing License.

Chevron Wildlife Rehabilitation Unit

As part of Chevron Pascagoula Refinery’s oil spill preparedness, members of Pascagoula’s Oiled Wildlife Response Team (OWRT) designed and had constructed a one-of-a-kind wildlife rehabilitation unit – the only fully-equipped oiled wildlife rehab unit in the world that can be transported by air.

Built by Featherlite to rigorous specifications, the trailer is 108 inches in height, the maximum height commercial air carriers can accommodate. On the ground, the trailer can be pulled by a standard truck (one or two ton) with the proper hitch. The 38-by-8 foot trailer contains all the specialized equipment required to evaluate, clean and rehabilitate oiled wildlife. It is also equipped with the laboratory facilities required by a veterinarian during the response and rehabilitation period.

As participants in the refinery’s environmental education outreach activities, OWRT members display the unit in presentations at local schools and community events. To make arrangements for the unit presentation contact Chevron Pascagoula Public & Government Affairs at pasms@chevron.com

Wildlife Rehab – Displaying the wildlife rehabilitation unit at community event Shepard State Park, Pascagoula Refinery employees Curtis Webb and Ken Erwin explain how the refinery’s wildlife unit would be used to clean oiled birds affected by an oil spill.
