Partnerships and the innovation behind them are helping Chevron to develop more energy with less environmental impact.

three partnerships, one big opportunity

We’re increasing the use of renewables in a number of our products, with the goal to reduce life cycle emissions, in an effort to help our customers achieve their own lower carbon goals.

chevron and algonquin

Building upon our prior use of renewable power for operations in Texas and California, Chevron is partnering with Algonquin Power & Utilities Corporation under a four-year agreement to co-develop renewable-power projects that provide electricity to strategic assets across our global portfolio. This represents the latest, and largest, advance in our efforts to integrate renewable power in support of our operations.

We are prioritizing opportunities in the U.S. Permian Basin (Texas and New Mexico), Argentina, Kazakhstan, and Western Australia. Projects will be jointly owned and co-developed by both parties. Algonquin will lead the design, development, and construction of the renewable-power assets. We will purchase electricity through power purchase agreements.

Our partnership leverages the complementary technologies of Chevron’s long-standing expertise in hydroprocessing, particularly ISODEWAXING, with Novvi’s innovative use of renewable feedstocks to produce and market high-performance, synthetic, and renewable premium base oils. Chevron is an equity investor in the California-based Novvi LLC, and we entered into an agreement to jointly develop and bring to market novel renewable base oil technologies.

Global businesses are prioritizing carbon reduction in their efforts to protect the environment. Our partnership with Novvi is a step toward our goal of helping customers achieve enhanced performance and lower carbon intensity.

Chevron has partnered with California natural-gas retailer Clean Energy Fuels Corporation on Adopt-a-Port, an initiative that provides truck operators serving the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach with renewable natural gas (RNG). Truck operators participating in the program, which supports the ports’ Clean Trucks Program and Clean Air Action Plan, agree to fuel up at the Clean Energy stations supplied by Chevron.

At the El Segundo Refinery in California, Chevron is exploring how plant-based oils may be mighty in the future of renewables.

a different kind of oil

Our planet offers countless sources of energy – even in a little seedling, which when turned into fuel, can help power a plane.

Thanks in part to human innovation at Chevron, the El Segundo Refinery in California is set to become the first refinery in the U.S. to ratably co-process plant-based oil in a fluid catalytic cracker unit to make gasoline, jet fuel and diesel fuel with renewable content.

Renewable biofuels can play an important role in reducing the life-cycle carbon intensity of transportation fuels while meeting the world’s growing energy needs.

El Segundo supplies more than 20 percent of all motor vehicle fuels consumed in Southern California and is expected to start supplying consumers in the area with biofuel products using this technology by late 2021.
