Unocal 76 secures No. 2 position in Las Vegas area; new partnership with Rebel Oil reinforces company's role in retail gasoline market

Costa Mesa, Calif., June 4, 1996 -- Unocal 76 today announced a long-term strategic partnership with Rebel Oil Company in Las Vegas, Nev., that will solidify Unocal's position as the second largest gasoline retailer in the Las Vegas market.

Under the agreement, nine existing Rebel Oil retail sites in the greater Las Vegas metropolitan area will be re-branded under the Unocal 76 name, and five new Unocal-branded sites will be constructed on vacant property. All of these sites will be supplied by Unocal 76.

Rebel Oil convenience stores will still operate under the Rebel name. Details of the agreement were not disclosed.

Lawrence M. Higby, president of Unocal's 76 Products Company, said the partnership puts Unocal 76 in a solid no. 2 position in the Las Vegas market. He added that teaming with a well-known and well- respected company like Rebel reinforces Unocal 76's commitment to the local community.

"We've been proud of our relationship with Rebel Oil over the years, and we're impressed with Rebel's commitment to community involvement -- a commitment we wholeheartedly share," Higby said. "Rebel Oil is a solid company and we look forward to continuing to grow our partnership with them."

Unocal's relationship with Rebel Oil goes back more than 10 years. Unocal currently supplies gasoline to 15 Unocal 76 branded retail sites that are operated by Rebel in Southern Nevada.

Orange County-based 76 Products Company, the marketing, refining, product supply and transportation unit of Unocal Corporation, offers gasoline plus a variety of convenience products and services to customers through a network of approximately 1,200 branded Unocal 76 retail sites in the West and Hawaii. The company operates three California refineries with a crude oil processing capacity of 250,000 barrels per day.

76 Products Company is rapidly transforming a number of its sites into retail convenience centers, which are custom-designed to provide speedy service and quality products. These centers, some operated by franchisees of the company itself, offer a variety of services including brand-name fast food such as Carl's Jr., Burger King and Subway; 76 FastBreak convenience stores; 76 AutoPulse Service Centers; 76 ProWash car washes; and Bank of America Versateller (ATM) machines. The company is actively pursuing alliances with quality brand partners to build a leadership position in gasoline sales and convenience retailing.
