API Elects New Chairman and Treasurer

WASHINGTON, Oct. 14, 2002 -- David J. O'Reilly, chairman and chief executive officer of ChevronTexaco Corporation, has been elected as chairman of the Board of the American Petroleum Institute, effective January 1, 2003. Claiborne P. Deming, president and chief executive officer of Murphy Oil Corporation, El Dorado, Arkansas, has been elected as API's treasurer, also effective January 1, 2003. Both have been elected to one-year terms. API's election of officers is held annually.
"The energy industry plays a vital role in the American economy," said O'Reilly. "As chairman of the American Petroleum Institute I look forward to making a valuable contribution to enhancing the dialogue on the important economic and environmental policy issues that our industry faces and to communicating to policy makers and the public the important contributions of America's oil and natural gas companies."
As chairman of API's Board of Directors, O'Reilly will also chair API's 25-member Policy Committee and 10-member Executive Committee, on which he currently serves. He has served on the API Board since 1995, as treasurer in 2002, and as chairman of the API Downstream Committee in 1997.
A native of Dublin, Ireland, O'Reilly earned a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering in 1968 from University College, Dublin, from which he also received an honorary doctor of science degree in June 2002. O'Reilly began his career with Chevron Research Company in 1968. Following a number of assignments of increasing management responsibility, O'Reilly was elected a vice president of Chevron Corporation in 1991, responsible for strategic planning and coordination of the company's quality improvement activities. He also served as a director of Caltex Petroleum Corporation from 1992 until 1994. In 1994 he was elected president of Chevron Products Company, responsible for the company's U.S. refining and marketing operations. In 1998 O'Reilly was elected a vice chairman of the board of Chevron Corporation, responsible for worldwide exploration and production. He became chairman and CEO of Chevron Corporation on January 1, 2000. The merger of Chevron and Texaco was completed in October 2001.
Deming is a director of Murphy Oil Corporation and Murphy Oil Company, Ltd. in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and a member of the board of Entergy Corporation. Deming has served on the API Board since 1994, and on many of its Committees including Public Policy, Management, Budget Advisory, Audit and the Industry Reputation Strategic Issue Group, and as chairman of the Awards Committee in 1998. He currently serves on API's Policy Committee.
A native of Alexandria, Louisiana, Deming earned a bachelor's degree in arts and sciences and a law degree from Tulane University. Deming joined Murphy Oil Corporation in 1979. He was appointed to the company's management team in 1988, running the company's oil and gas business. In 1992, he became chief operating officer, and, in 1994, he became chief executive officer.
