Texaco Press Release - Deval L. Patrick Joins Texaco as General Counsel and Vice President
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 16, 1998.
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Dec. 16 - Deval L. Patrick has been elected General Counsel of Texaco, it was announced today by Texaco Inc. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Peter I. Bijur. Bijur also announced that Patrick has been elected a Vice President of Texaco Inc. and will serve on Texaco's Executive Council, the company's senior leadership team. The appointments are effective February 8, 1999.
Current General Counsel Stephen M. Turner, 59, will step down from that post upon Patrick's arrival, but will remain as Senior Vice President until his retirement on June 1, 1999.
Patrick, 42, is currently a partner with the Boston law firm Day Berry & Howard LLP, and serves as chairperson of Texaco's Equality and Fairness Task Force. He will resign from his role with the Task Force effective immediately.
"Deval Patrick has achieved success and earned great esteem as a first-class attorney in both private practice and public service," said Bijur in making the announcement. "His leadership abilities, high ethical standards, breadth of experience and knowledge of Texaco will strengthen and enhance our management team and legal department. We are very pleased that Deval has agreed to join the Texaco organization."
Prior to being named Partner with Day, Berry & Howard in 1997, Patrick served as Assistant Attorney General of the United States and chief of the U.S. Justice Department's Civil Rights Division from 1994-97, where he was responsible for enforcing federal laws prohibiting discrimination. From 1986-94, Patrick was a partner with another private law firm in Boston, supervising commercial and civil rights litigation. From 1983-86, Patrick was a staff attorney with the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, following service as a law clerk on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in Los Angeles.
Patrick graduated cum laude from Harvard College in 1978, and earned his law degree from Harvard Law School in 1982. He is the recipient of several honorary degrees and other awards.
Patrick is a member of the bar associations in Massachusetts, the District of Columbia and California, and is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the First, Fifth, Ninth and Eleventh Circuits, and various federal district courts.
Patrick is married and has two children. His office will be located in Texaco's corporate headquarters in White Plains, N.Y.
