Texaco Press Release - H. Alex Archila Appointed President of The Texas Petroleum Company (Texpet)

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., May 22 - H. Alex Archila has been appointed President of The Texas Petroleum Company (Texpet), Texaco's subsidiary operating in Colombia, effective June 1, it was announced today by John E. Bethancourt, Vice President of Texaco Inc. and President of Worldwide Production Operations. Archila, currently Regional Director - Upstream Business Development, succeeds Alan W. Halsey, who has been appointed Chairman of Texaco Overseas (Nigeria) Petroleum Company Unlimited. In his new assignment, Archila will relocate from Houston to Bogota, Colombia.
Commenting on the announcement, Bethancourt said, "Alex's broad operations management experience and business development skills, coupled with his knowledge of our Colombian business activities, make him an ideal candidate for this position. We look forward to the contributions his leadership will bring to Texaco's success in Colombia."
In his new assignment, Archila will be responsible for overseeing all exploration and production operations in Colombia where Texaco has had operations for more than 72 years. Texaco and the Colombian National Oil Company, Ecopetrol, currently produce 500 million cubic feet of gas per day from three onshore and offshore fields, which satisfy almost 90 percent of Colombia's natural gas demand.
Archila was graduated from The University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1983 with a bachelor of science degree in petroleum engineering, and from the Universidad de la Sabana in Bogota, Colombia, in 1995 with a master of business administration degree. Archila began his career with Texaco in the company's Exploration Department in Guatemala in 1984 as a drilling engineer. He was transferred to Texaco Angola in Luanda in 1985 as a reservoir engineer, and was later appointed Chief Reservoir Engineer.
In 1989 Archila was transferred to the company's Latin America/West Africa Division in Coral Gables, Fla., where he subsequently held a number of engineering assignments of increasing responsibility. In 1992 he was transferred to Bogota, Colombia, as Oil Unit Manager in the Producing Department, and in 1995, he was named Senior Commercial Advisor for Texaco Ltd. located in London. He was named Assistant to the Vice President, Production Operations - Middle East/Eurasia, also in London, in 1996. Archila was appointed to his current position of Regional Director - Upstream Business Development in Houston in 1998.
