JAMES R. METZGER NAMED Texaco's CHIEF TECHNOLOGY OFFICER

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., March 29 - Texaco Inc. Vice President James R. Metzger has been named the company's Chief Technology Officer, it was announced today by Peter I. Bijur, Texaco Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. The appointment is effective April 1, 1999.
Metzger will continue in his assignment as head of the company's Corporate Planning and Economics Group and Global Information Services, and will continue to serve as a member of Texaco's Executive Council. In addition, effective June 1, Metzger will assume oversight responsibility for Texaco's Safety, Health and Environment and Corporate Services Departments.
"Technology is a cornerstone of our business and a critical element of our growth strategy," said Bijur in making the announcement. "In his new assignment, Jim Metzger will promote the strategic development and implementation of technology across all of Texaco's business units to meet the company's current and future business needs."
As Chief Technology Officer, Metzger will chair the Texaco Technology Council, which coordinates Texaco's various technology initiatives across the assorted lines of business, and reviews the activities, expenditures and results of technology related initiatives within Texaco and through the company's joint ventures, affiliates and contract research.
In addition to its continuing focus on both upstream and downstream technologies, the Chief Technology Officer and the Technology Council will expand focus areas on Knowledge Management, Neural networks, E-Commerce, and alternative fuels and energy sources.
Metzger was graduated from Rice University in 1969 with a bachelor of commerce degree. Upon graduation, he joined Texaco as a programmer trainee in the Information Technology Department in Houston. Metzger subsequently held various positions of increasing responsibility, including Manager - Projects in the Computer Services Department of Texaco Ltd. in London (1980), Manager in charge of non-U.S. operations in Texaco's Information Technology Department in Houston (1982), Director of the Corporate Services Department at the company's corporate offices in White Plains, N.Y. (1984), Director of Affiliate Analysis (1987) and General Manager of the Information Technology Department (1988).
Metzger was appointed General Manager of Corporate Planning and Economics in 1994 and was elected a Vice President of Texaco Inc. in 1996.
Metzger will continue to work at the company's Corporate Center in White Plains.
