Texaco Press Release - Texaco Announces Biggest Sweepstakes in Company's History "Race to Millions"
"Race to Millions" Seeks to Put Customers in the Winner's Circle
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MONDAY, APRIL 7, 1997.
HOUSTON, April 7 -- Texaco and Star Enterprise today announced the biggest national sweepstakes in the Texaco brand's history, the "Race to Millions" scratch-off game. Taking place from May 24-July 6, "Race to Millions" is based on the performance of Texaco-sponsored motorsports teams in CART (Champion Auto Racing Teams); Formula One; NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing); and NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) to potentially give away more than $25 million in cash awards, trips and instant win prizes. Odds of winning an instant prize are one in four.
The sweepstakes is an exciting opportunity to reward Texaco customers whenever a Texaco motorsports driver wins a race during the six-week promotional period. From May 24-July 6, customers can obtain a free game piece at participating Texaco retail locations (no purchase is necessary).
The game piece will feature three scratch-off areas: 1) a space for a Texaco-sponsored driver's name; 2) a space for a grand prize; and 3) a space for an instant-win prize. If the Texaco driver revealed on the card wins a race during the promotional period, the customer wins the grand prize printed in the second space -- either a trip for two to a great race city destination or $1 million. Each of the eleven Texaco-sponsored drivers will participate in the sweepstakes, for a total of eleven $1 million cash prizes that potentially could be awarded.
"Texaco has been involved in racing since 1917," said Mark Johnson, Manager, Motorfuels/Advertising & Sales Promotion. "Since that time, a lot of things have changed in the sport, including the number of races in which Texaco participates and the speed at which those races are driven.
"The one thing that hasn't changed, however, is our customers' continued support and commitment to our motorsports program. We've designed "Race to Millions" to thank our many customers for their support. We believe that when Texaco wins, our customers also should win. "Race to Millions" will allow Texaco the chance to share the winner's circle with all its customers."
In the event that no Texaco driver wins a race during the promotional timeframe and the $1 million grand prize is not awarded, Texaco will hold a second-chance drawing, thereby guaranteeing at least one $1 million winner. All verified prize winners who have submitted their card for an instant-win prize or who have mailed in their card as a possible $1 million or trip winner will be entered into a drawing, from which one winner's name will be pulled. The lucky winner will be awarded $1 million.
A total of 25 trips for two may be awarded during the contest to Daytona Beach, Denver, Long Beach, Miami, Monterey, Monte Carlo, Montreal, Portland, Rio De Janeiro, Seattle, Sonoma, Sydney, Tokyo and Toronto.
In addition to the grand prizes, the third scratch-off area may contain instant-win prizes, including a year's supply of CleanSystem3® gasoline, Texaco/Havoline racing gear or a coupon good for $1 worth of free Texaco Power Plus or Texaco Power Premium gasoline. Winners of the $1 worth of free gasoline are not eligible for the second-chance $1 million drawing.
The Texaco drivers racing for millions are Michael Andretti, CART; Christian Fittipaldi, CART; Jimmy Vasser, CART; Alex Zanardi, CART; Rubens Barrichello, Formula One; Jan Magnussen, Formula One; Ernie Irvan, NASCAR; Dale Jarrett, NASCAR; Darrell Waltrip, NASCAR; Randy Anderson, NHRA; and Shelly Anderson, NHRA.
"As drivers, we're excited about the chance to not only race for Texaco, but also for its customers and our fans who have been so supportive through the years," said Michael Andretti. "We're looking forward to sharing the driver's seat, so to speak, with Texaco customers and hope that our good fortune leads to their good fortune."
"Race to Millions" will be held in all states except Massachusetts, Maryland, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Virginia and West Virginia. During the six-week "Race to Millions" promotional period, customers in these states may purchase one of two custom-designed Texaco/Havoline racing caps for a suggested retail price of $3.99 with a minimum eight-gallon purchase of Texaco Power Plus or Texaco Power Premium gasoline at participating Texaco retail locations. (No gasoline purchase is required in New Jersey.)
This is the first time Texaco has backed a national sales promotion simultaneously with radio, network and spot television, and print advertising. Point-of-sale (POS) material, including racing pennants, stick signs, deluxe pumptoppers and other items, will also be posted at nearly 10,000 participating Texaco-branded stations.
The company feels there is no better place to showcase Texaco's premium petroleum products than America's No.1 spectator sport. The drama of daring athletes, driving superbly-engineered racing machines in exciting contests of speed and skill, is a perfect atmosphere in which to promote Texaco products and services.
