A moving day: Unocal's 76 Products Company begins relocation to new Costa Mesa headquarters

Costa Mesa, Calif., Feb. 2, 1996 - Unocal's 76 Products Company today announced that the first wave of a total 820 Associates began moving into their new state-of-the-art, high-rise headquarters in Costa Mesa on Friday, officially marking the company's arrival as one of the 10 largest businesses in Orange County.

The process of relocating hundreds of people from eight buildings spread throughout Los Angeles and Orange Counties will take several months. 76 Products Company is the marketing, refining, product supply and transportation unit of Unocal Corporation, with annual sales in excess of $2.5 billion.

"This is an historic occasion both for Unocal and for Orange County. For the first time in several years, all of our key management team will be headquartered in the same facility," said Lawrence M. Higby, president of 76 Products Company. "We believe that Costa Mesa is a vibrant, growing business center and will provide a great working environment for our people."

The new headquarters, located at 555 Anton Blvd., encompasses 200,000 square feet in a 12-story structure.

The company has spent the past several months completely rebuilding the interior of its new headquarters in order to revamp the space into offices of the future. Highlights include:

  • High-speed data lines connecting every Associate to the latest fiber optic technology.
  • Conference rooms equipped with cameras for video conferencing.
  • A gym.
  • A Club room where employees can congregate, eat breakfast or lunch, or plug in their laptop computers to one of the many available outlets.
  • A Taco Bell, Subway and 76 FastBreak convenience store on the first floor, as well as a credit union and an automatic teller machine.

The design reflects research that showed that managers tended to spend less than 30 percent of the working day in their offices, while Associates spent much more time at their work stations -- that's why the work stations are near windows with a view and managers' offices are located to the inside or interior of each floor. To accommodate privacy, each floor will have a number of conference rooms and resource rooms for private phones calls, project teams and meetings.

Each floor will have coffee stations, but no food or vending machines -- this will encourage Associates to ride down the elevator to the FastBreak or The Club for their breaks. This will help foster relationships among Associates who otherwise might not have opportunities to interact.

Another 300 corporate employees from Unocal Center in Downtown Los Angeles are scheduled to move to the Saturn building in Brea after 76 Products Company employees move to Costa Mesa; additional employees from various Unocal business units will move from Unocal Center to Unocal's Fred L. Hartley Research Center in Brea. Overall, Unocal expects to have approximately 1,300 employees in Orange County by mid-1996.

76 Products Company signed a 10-year lease on the Costa Mesa property last June.

76 Products Company, with revenues in excess of $2.5 billion, has approximately 1,200 branded Unocal 76 service stations throughout the West and operates three California refineries with a crude oil processing capacity of 250,000 barrels per day.
