Unocal board elects Williamson as chairman; Creighton to remain as director
El Segundo, Calif., Oct. 31, 2001 - Unocal Corporation (NYSE: UCL) today said that its board of directors has elected Charles R. Williamson as chairman of the board effective today. Williamson will continue as Unocal's chief executive officer.
Williamson succeeds John W. Creighton, Jr., who resigned as a non-executive chairman, but will continue as a director of the company.
"Jack Creighton has provided invaluable leadership as chairman as we have moved to capture value from our growth portfolio," Williamson said. "We are pleased that he will remain on the board of directors, giving us the benefit of his leadership and experience."
Williamson, 53, joined Unocal in 1977. He has spent his career in exploration and production, holding senior positions of increasing responsibility in the United Kingdom, The Netherlands, and Thailand. He was executive vice president, International Energy Operations, prior to becoming chief executive officer on Jan. 1, 2001.
Williamson has been a member of Unocal's board of directors since Jan. 1, 2000. He holds a Ph.D. in geology from the University of Texas at Austin.
Creighton, 69, joined Unocal's board of directors in 1995. He became non-executive chairman of Unocal's board on Jan. 1, 2001.
