Unocal Canada expands Aitken Creek gas storage reservoir capacity in British Columbia with new equipment
Calgary, Alberta, May 19, 2000 -- Unocal Canada Limited today announced the addition of new natural gas handling equipment at Unocal's Aitken Creek gas storage reservoir near Ft. St. John, British Columbia, that will help increase gas storage capacity at the facility.
The new equipment includes an 18,500 BHP compressor supplied by Houston-based ABB Alstom Power Inc., and a 200 million cubic feet per day processing train supplied by Edmonton-based Presson Manufacturing Limited. The compressor is scheduled to be operational in August 2001, and the processing equipment is scheduled to be operational in November 2000.
The improvements are part of an ongoing development plan already approved by the regulatory authority to ultimately increase the working gas storage capacity at Aitken Creek to 80 billion cubic feet of natural gas.
Aitken Creek is a major underground gas storage facility located in northeast British Columbia and is connected to the Westcoast Energy Inc. pipeline system. Gas from the storage facility currently serves markets in Western Canada and the U.S. Pacific Northwest. The Aitken Creek storage facility will also be connected with the Alliance Pipeline (currently under construction) that will service U.S. Midwest markets. Aitken Creek's direct connection to both the Alliance Pipeline and the Westcoast Energy Pipeline will allow Unocal Canada to offer hub services to producers, utilities, end users and natural gas marketing companies in the northeast British Columbia marketplace. These hub services are anticipated to provide more flexibility and bring much needed liquidity to this part of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin.
Unocal Canada operates Aitken Creek and owns a 93.79-percent working interest in the facility. Unocal Canada also owns 30 percent of the Alberta Hub natural gas storage facility located near Edson, Alberta.
