Unocal expects special item environmental provision for 1Q 2002
El Segundo, Calif., April 8, 2002 - Unocal Corporation (NYSE: UCL) today said it will include a special item provision of approximately $30 million pretax ($20 million aftertax) for anticipated environmental remediation costs in its first quarter 2002 reported net earnings.
The provision will be a special item and will not affect Unocal's adjusted aftertax earnings, which are the basis for the published Thompson/First Call earnings estimates. The provision will not impact Unocal's first quarter 2002 earnings guidance that was issued March 15, 2002.
Substantially all of the environmental provision relates to formerly operated sites, sites previously sold with retained responsibilities, and other inactive sites.
The disclosure of the provision was made today in an 8-K filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
