Unocal names James H. Painter to head exploration and technology group
El Segundo, Calif., Jan. 26, 2004 - Unocal Corporation (NYSE: UCL) today said that James H. Painter has been named senior vice president, Exploration and Technology, for the company. Painter succeeds Christopher A. Wright, who will retire from Unocal later this year.
Previously, Painter was vice president, Exploration, for Devon Energy. Before the Ocean Energy merger with Devon, Painter was Ocean Energy's senior vice president of Gulf of Mexico and International Exploration and served as a member of the Ocean management team.
"James is a proven oil and gas finder who brings excellent technical skills and significant general management and leadership capabilities to Unocal," said Timothy H. Ling, Unocal president and chief operating officer. "He has repeatedly demonstrated the ability to build strong exploration teams and programs, and has an impressive exploration success record, particularly in the Gulf of Mexico deep water."
Ling went on to say that Painter's capabilities and experience will compliment Unocal's strong prospect inventory and help to ensure that the company's programs maintain the momentum that was developed under Wright's leadership.
