Unocal names Samuel Gillespie as senior vice president, chief legal officer and general counsel
El Segundo, Calif., Sept. 30, 2003 - Unocal Corporation (NYSE: UCL) today said its board of directors has named Samuel H. Gillespie III as senior vice president, chief legal officer and general counsel, effective Oct. 1, 2003. Gillespie succeeds Charles O. Strathman and Timothy H. Thomas who had been serving as chief legal officer and general counsel, respectively, on an interim basis. Both Strathman and Thomas will resume their former positions as vice president, Law, during a transition period over the next several months.
Gillespie joins Unocal from the Washington, D.C., office of the law firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher and Flom, where he advised energy clients and worked on a variety of international projects. Previously, he was senior vice president and general counsel with Mobil Corporation.
"Sam will provide high-quality, focused leadership to our Law Department based on his extensive background in our industry," said Charles R. Williamson, Unocal chairman and chief executive officer. "Sam brings extraordinary international experience to Unocal, particularly with respect to Southeast Asia energy markets. His skills and experience in business transactions will be invaluable as Unocal pursues its long-term growth strategy."
Gillespie holds a bachelor's degree from Middlebury College and a law degree from Vanderbilt University. He is a trustee of the National Judicial College and a former member of the ABA Commission on Women in the Profession.
