Unocal proceeds with search and recovery effort following helicopter accident
Sugar Land, Texas, March 26, 2004 - Unocal Corporation (NYSE: UCL) said today that it will continue search and recovery efforts in the area where a helicopter transporting a Unocal employee and seven contractors was lost earlier this week.
The company's search efforts are being conducted in cooperation with the National Transportation Safety Board, which is investigating the crash. The search focuses on finding the two remaining passengers and additional aircraft wreckage.
This follows an announcement that the U.S. Coast Guard has discontinued search and rescue operations.
Four vessels contracted by Unocal are patrolling the search area. In addition to three oilfield supply vessels, the company is using the Midnight Wrangler, a 340-foot dynamic positioning vessel, equipped with a remote operating vehicle with sonar capabilities, a 120-ton crane, a 60-ton crane and a helicopter landing deck.
Unocal said it appreciates the support and expertise of the U.S. Coast Guard and its industry peers who have offered assistance throughout this situation.
