Unocal supports Global Sullivan Principles for corporate responsibility

El Segundo, Calif., Nov. 3, 1999 -- Unocal Corporation today said it supports the Global Sullivan Principles, which serve as a framework for good corporate citizenship for multinational companies around the world.

Unocal, along with 500 world leaders, humanitarian officials and corporate CEOs, participated in a historic ceremony Tuesday at the United Nations where the Rev. Leon H. Sullivan formally announced the principles.

"The high standards of the Global Sullivan Principles provide an important model for ethical behavior of every corporation that operates worldwide," said Roger C. Beach, Unocal chairman and chief executive officer. "These principles are consistent with Unocal's commitment to improve the lives of people wherever we work."

Beach noted that the Global Sullivan Principles were invaluable in formulating Unocal's own guiding principles of doing business.

"We share the Rev. Sullivan's belief in the critical importance of education and training for tomorrow's leaders," Beach said. "As part of Unocal's worldwide corporate responsibility programs, the company supports a number of educational and humanitarian projects that are helping thousands of children and families in the different regions where we do business."

The Global Sullivan Principles were developed by the Rev. Sullivan in conjunction with a number of major corporations. Companies that endorse the principles are encouraged to share with the Rev. Sullivan and other companies their successes, best practices and challenges as they work to implement their own corporate responsibility programs.

The Rev. Sullivan is a noted civil rights leader and recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He developed his set of corporate responsibility principles to promote business support for human rights, economic justice, racial and gender equality, sustainable development and a clean environment. The Rev. Sullivan's organizations have established successful programs to provide job skills and training across the U.S. and throughout Africa. He is also the founder and chairman of successful gatherings of African government leaders at annual "African/African-American Summit Meetings."

Unocal is a leading independent oil and gas exploration and production company with pipeline and power plant development projects worldwide. The company recently issued a report on its global corporate responsibility programs, including education and environmental programs.
