chevron commits to tier 3 fuels in Utah
Utah, April 18, 2017—Chevron understands the importance of improving air quality in Utah. That is why we are pleased to announce that we will voluntarily invest in our Salt Lake Refinery to produce and sell lower-sulfur, Tier 3 fuels in the state to help improve air quality.
Since 1990, we have made significant investments at our refinery to reduce our facility air emissions by 90 percent while producing more quality, affordable fuel for our customers. We have also worked with community partners, such as the Utah Clean Air Partnership (UCAIR), to implement programs like the gas can exchange that have helped reduce emissions from small area sources through voluntary grant programs.
Today, we are announcing our commitment to reconfigure the refinery to produce and sell Tier 3 fuels in Utah by the end of 2019. Tier 3 fuels are very low in sulfur. These fuels help reduce tailpipe emissions from automobiles, which are the largest contributor of emissions in the state. According to UCAIR, if every refiner sells Tier 3 fuels in Utah, and if all consumers eventually upgrade their cars and trucks to the latest models, the long-term impact on emissions would be the equivalent of taking four out of every five cars off the road.
“We live and work here, and we want to have the best air quality possible,” said Mitra Kashanchi, the Refinery Manager for Chevron Salt Lake. “We are very pleased to collaborate with the Governor, the Legislature, and our community partners to make it possible to implement Tier 3 in Utah.”
